Cutting the deepest river gorge in North America— Hells Canyon, the Snake River forms the border of Oregon and Idaho. River travellers will journey through the land of the Nez Perce, and through geologic time.

The largest whitewater rapids in the Pacific Northwest are found on this Snake River rafting trip. Soaring eagles, snow-capped peaks, wild mountain goats and Native American legends make Idaho whitewater rafting trips an idyllic getaway adventure. Golden grass and pine forests carpet the canyon's geography while you camp on large sandy beaches, perfect for stargazing at night.

Inviting water temperatures are heavenly for swimming and paddling. No wonder a four, five, or six-day Snake River rafting vacation is known around the globe as an unforgettable adventure.

As this year will be my 60th my eldest son Paul asked me if I fancied a trip down the Grand Canyon. Well I've been lucky enough to trek to Everest Base Camp and balloon over the Serengeti so with fingers crossed I said yes. This was a truly wonderful trip, especially as I did it with my eldest son Paul. The Canyon was always somewhere I hoped to go and it was right up there with Everest Base Camp. There were some great people on the trip and the Catain Steve and Johny FU helped make it special with great stories (I bought the book) and wonderful food. I loved my time on the forward deck and the great views of a very special place as well as the thrill of fantastic rapids. Whatever age this is a trip that everyone , who can, should make in their lifetime, particularly with family or close friend(s).

Itinerary

DAY 1 » The team leader will meet you at 7:30 am, where a two hour bus ride will bring you to to the launch point at Hell's Canyon Dam. Enjoy a breakfast stop hosted by the trip outfitter ROW Adventures. A safety orientation will prepare you for the trip, while your gear is loaded onto the boats. You'll be ready to paddle, ride an oar-powered raft, or paddle your own inflatable kayak.

Two class IV rapids, Wild Sheep and Granite, will challenge your whitewater skills on day one -- with smaller rapids spread out through the day to give you a feel for the river. Camps are usually arrived at by 4pm each afternoon, allowing time for fishing, hiking or relaxation in the alpine air. Hors d’oeuvres are served about an hour before dinner, usually served around 7:30 pm.

DAY 2 » Freshly brewed coffee greets your senses at about 7 am, with breakfast following a short time thereafter. Personal gear, tents and kitchen gear is loaded back on the boats and readied for a day filled with rapids, settler's cabins, and incredible mountain scenery.

Day 3 » A rare view of the Snake River and Hell's Canyon reward for those choosing to hike the trail to "Suicide Point". You'll welcome a splash in the river as you return to the boats and float downstream to more scenic and historic sites--including the historic Kirkwood Ranch.

Day 4, 5, 6 » Each day on the Snake River offers something a little different from the day before. Rapids, scenery that lifts the eye and heart upwards where raptors of various kinds soar over historic homesteads. The human history in Hell's Canyon is just as dramatic as the canyon walls. The trip will end near 5 pm and you'll enjoy a hot shower at the Hotel in Lewiston before meeting the guides and group for a farewell dinner hosted by ROW.
