The 2010 ‘Dinosaurs of the Gobi August 13-28, 2010’ will offer participants the unique opportunity to participate in the excavation of the famous ‘Dragon’s Tomb’, a duck-billed dinosaur bonebed that contains skeletons of Saurolophus that are as big or bigger than T.rex from North America. The site is located in the heart of the best and most picturesque dinosaur badlands in the Altai Gobi region of southern Mongolia. The site was originally discovered and collected in the late 1950’s by the Soviet-Mongolian Expedition and produced beautiful skeletons that are now on display in Mongolia, Russia, and other museum’s around the world as part of Mongolia’s touring dinosaur exhibition.
This year’s expedition will be lead by horned-dinosaur expert Dr. Michael Ryan from the Cleveland Museum of Natural History who is now a veteran of eight Gobi expeditions in the past five years. The trip’s co-leader will be Dr. David Evans from the Royal Ontario Museum who joined Ryan last year for a preliminary survey of the site during which they collected a Saurolophus skull and part of a juvenile Tarbosaurus (the Asian Tyrannosaurus). Together with their Mongolian colleagues, Ryan and Evans have published on the Mongolian dome-headed dinosaur, Homalocephale, based on their research in Mongolia.
This year’s participants will get the opportunity to help uncover the secrets of The Dragon’s Tomb with two of the most experienced dinosaur collectors and researchers in the world.
