This eight-day horse trek passes through the spectacular forests and meadows of Mongolia's northernmost province before reaching Lake Hovsgol, a crystal-clear alpine lake known as Mongolia's "dark blue pearl."
Designed for more experienced horseback riders who are comfortable riding over steep and difficult terrain, a highlight of this journey will be visiting the Tsaatans, members of the Turkic-speaking Tuvinian ethnic group known as Dukha. Tsaatan families herd domesticated reindeer, which they use primarily for transportation and milk, and live in teepees among the mountains, lakes, and larch forests of this remote region.
The horses used on the trek are generally smaller and leaner than those riders may be used to, a characteristic of this sturdy Mongolian breed. Approximately six to eight hours (30 - 40 km) will be spent in the saddle each day, with traditional Russian cavalry-style saddles provided for each participant. In addition to the bilingual Nomadic Expeditions guide, the crew will include a camp cook and local horse wranglers.
Trip Highlights:
Ride Mongolian horses, legendary for their great stamina and ability to negotiate difficult terrain
Enjoy many opportunities to hike and fish in Northern Mongolia’s pristine wilderness
Ride into the tundra to visit the Tsaatans, a small ethnic group who herd domesticated reindeer
