Ecological/Environmental Impact

We try to keep our environmental impact to a minimum by considering all areas of where damage is possible. First of all we work with small groups so that our noise pollution does not affect the fauna in the national park, we can keep path erosion to a minimum by sticking to the paths and only camping at allocated camp sites. Secondly, the water. The water in the national park is still drinkable so, we adhere to strict regulations of no washing in, or nearby the lakes and streams, no swimming and to only use the latrines available for human waste. Walk Patagonia from the first day has been very strict regarding rubbish. We walk our rubbish out of the national park, we then recycle as much as is possible in a very small town with not that many resources available. We cannot achieve 100% zero impact, but we do strive to keep it to a minimum. We also keep ourselves up to date with new discoveries and ideas for reducing environmental and ecological impact.

Sociological Impact

El Chaltén is an interesting town as it was founded in 1985. As the town is young and full of Argentineans from all over the country there isn´t a local culture to be lost or damaged. Another point of interest is the town solely exists through tourism and therefore the majority of people only live here during the spring and summer, the high season. During autumn and winter, there is no tourism therefore the local people emigrate to other places in Argentina in order to find work. What Walk Patagonia proposes little by little is to generate winter tourist activities to be able to give work to the locals throughout the year. This would avoid family separation and generate a feeling of belonging to El Chaltén.

Economic Impact

We are a small company who works directly with locals in the area. We employ locals for jobs which allow the locals to use their specialist skills i.e. horsemanship, local ground knowledge, orienteering, etc. By employing locals we ensure money stays within Argentina to help the local people and local economy.

Best Practices

POOP TUBES On expeditions to the Continental Ice Field and glaciers we use poop tubes in order not to leave any human waste behind. BOX LUNCHES We provide box lunches in paper bags. ORGANIC AND INORGANIC WASTE On treks we ask clients to keep their inorganic waste in their box lunch bag and to place organic waste in a bag that we provide. In El Chaltén we then dispose of the waste accordingly. WATER BOTTLES As the water in the National Park is drinkable, we try to keep plastic water bottles to a minimum by providing reusable plastic bottles (i.e. Nalgene). BATTERIES Walk Patagonia only uses rechargeable batteries for head torches, radios, GPS, etc. We recommend travellers coming here to do the same. If this is not possible we work with a project of collecting depleted batteries or unused batteries in boxes located in shops and hotels to later send to special plants set up by the government. DETERGENTS Walk Patagonia only uses biodegradable detergents whilst camping and in El Chaltén cleaning equipment or water bottles.
