A career with the National Audubon Society led Peg Abbott to found Naturalist Journeys 11 years ago. Abbott's trips focus primarily on birding and natural history (she has degrees in biology, forestry, and wildlife, plus 29 years of training as a naturalist guide). Yellowstone, southeastern Arizona, and New Mexico are the company's most popular destinations, but it also ventures much farther afield to the Galapagos, Guyana's rain forest, and the interior of Iceland. Small, environmentally sustainable hotels are the lodging of choice.

"What keeps us returning? For us Naturalist Journeys provides a holistic focus on flora and fauna, geology, history and culture without being obsessive about any one aspect. We travel in small groups of interesting, like-minded people with easy access to highly trained, caring naturalists. 2. Reviewer: Rolla Wagner, Grove, located in OK
“Peg Abbott is a pro – full of knowledge and diplomacy, generous with her time and attentive to our questions. Local guides add a new dimension to our learning with immediate local knowledge to share. I can hardly wait to go again!”
  3. Reviewer: Frances Kemper, Lynchberg located in VA
“Highlights were Costa Rica itself, the guides, birds and variety of activities. I had a chance to see this beautiful country with people in the know and to interact with people and environments that are not offered to ‘common’ tourists.”

After several journeys to Australia, we have to say that Tasmania, along with the wildlife and birding hotspots of Victoria, stand out in our minds as the top choices for summer. North Carolina’s fabled Outer Banks (OBX) are one of America’s prime tourist destinations, greeting throngs of beachgoers during the warmer months. But when the weather turns cold, the tourists depart and much of the infrastructure that supports them shuts down for the season.  It is then that vast numbers of swans, geese and ducks migrate to OBX and the adjacent mainland, and birders, waterfowl hunters, and fishermen become the main human visitors. The banks are actually a long chain of narrow… more
