San Sebastian’s charm and having eaten at Etxebarri that day definitely made a positive impression. Everything was wonderful and perfect. Gabriella was a delight, generous, and so well connected.  Thank you so much for such a fantastic trip.  We could not have done it without you and Gabriella, and everyone else involved with the tour.

Just returned from a fabulous trip to Spain. Thanks to Jane and her superb connections with great tour guides, my husband and I enjoyed a trip of a lifetime! We visited 7 wineries, learned much about Spanish wines, history (including my Sephardic Jewish ancestory) and culture and ate delicious food. The arrangements and accomodations were perfect. Will go back, hopefully soon!

I just wanted to let you know how delighted we were with our cooking class in San Sebastian. Chef Haritz did an incredible job of exposing us to what San Sebastian has to offer on a deeper, market-driven level—and made our day with him at the market and cooking class the highlight of our trip.

By introducing us to various fish mongers, farmers, produce importers, and specialty food shopkeepers, we gained a greater understanding of how Donosti chefs acquire the raw products for their culinary creations. Later, the dishes we prepared during our cooking class were inspired by what we selected at the market in the morning—improvised and truly driven by what was fresh and in season. His friendliness, professionalism, culinary knowledge, and sincere enthusiasm in helping us learn about gastronomy in San Sebastian were outstanding.

We typically shy away from organized tours, but we were so impressed with our Epicurean Ways experience that we will definitely “travel” with you again whenever we go to Spain.

Historic Priorat

Day 1

Today travel a world away from Barcelona to the renowned Priorat wine region, home to a cadre of enterprising winemakers drawn by the old vines and the characteristic native grapes and slate soils. Start with a tour and tasting at a mythical Gratallops winery, followed by an acclaimed family winery. Enjoy lunch at a traditional Priorat restaurant, then visit Scala Dei, the ancient town and 12th-century monastery that pioneered the region’s winemaking legacy. Also experience an introduction to olive oil, and tasting, at an old-world village shop. Tonight, proceed to your village hotel—a former modernist house—and prepare for a traditional Catalan meal at the hotel, paired with local wine.

Cheese, Charcuterie and Cooking

Day 2

You cannot come to the Priorat without visiting “the New York of the Priorat”, the village of La Vilella Baixa, known for the tall buildings towering over the surroundings.  You will visit an artisanal sausage maker for a tasting of local Catalan charcuterie. Then have a delightful lunch at a small restaurant at a nearby village. The afternoon will be devoted to learning about Catalan goat’s milk cheese, with an artisanal cheese maker’s demonstrations and a tasting accompanied by local wines at their scenic location. This evening enjoy a private cooking class with a local chef. Prepare a seasonal menu of such items as baby artichokes, a traditional rice and seafood dish, and baby lamb. Savor dinner at the restaurant along with Priorat wines.

Seafood & Olive Oil

Today, set off to explore the Delta of the Ebro River, where a very special culinary experience awaits you. Board a boat to a mussel and oyster platform and see how they bivalves are farmed, while tasting remarkably fresh mussels and oysters. Other seafood will accompany, as well as Catalan cava, and a local rice dish. Continue your journey traveling to a nearby area where 1000-year-old olive trees produce some of the region’s finest olive oil. Walk among the amazing ancient trees, tasting the olive oil. Next visit the town of Falset for an introduction to Spanish wines ,followed by dinner at a restaurant serving modernized Priorat cuisine and specializing in food and wine pairings.

Barcelona

Day 4

Check in to your centrally-located Barcelona hotel, near the emblematic Paseo de Gracia, studded with modernist landmarks. Perhaps choose to enjoy your morning at one of Barcelona’s world-class museums before lunch. The true introduction to the city begins with this Catalan seafood experience at an acclaimed restaurant by the water. In the afternoon, tour boutique food shops in the medieval Gothic Quarter, tasting specialty products such as “turrón” (almond nougat), Spanish farmhouse cheeses with a lovely glass of wine, traditional charcuterie, and artisanal chocolate. Tonight, dine at one of our long-standing favorite Barcelona restaurants.
